Mark Mawson

Mark Mawson, a photographer explores the synthesis of colour, ink and water. His works show the flowing journey of the water as it plunges through the water. The different coloured liquids in the water as they are submerged are photographed and they show the mixing, spinning and rippling of the ink. His work are frozen motion and capture the reaction of the ink with the water. The ink creates hypnotic shapes and illustrate a variety of illusions. Some of his pieces can portray vibrant jellyfish and ghostly pigmented lines.

This is an example of his work that show the vibrant jellyfish like shape but also a clouded look. Mawson has been able to capture the spiralling and rippling effect of the ink plunging through the water. He has also been able to capture the ink at the right time to see all the different ways the ink is affected by the water. The thinner ink that has spiralled up to the thicker ink that has clouded up. The black ground contrasts against the vibrant colours that Mawson has used in this piece. Mawson has used colours which work well together but also two primary colours. Within the clouded part of ink you are able to see slight shades of orange where the two inks have combined and mixed. Because of the colours used this piece could also represent fire or an explosion, the clouded part would represent the main part of an explosion then the thinner parts representing the fire flakes that jump out of a fire or an explosion.

In this piece you can see the journey of the drop of paint as it descends through the water. The background similarly to the other photo creates contrast with the vibrant red ink used. Within this photo you can see the way the heavier paint falls to the bottom of the water leaving a trail behind it, this trail shows how it reacts with in the water as it not a straight line from the top of the water to the bottom. The heavier ink have been captured while they look as if they are cupped and also look almost like a mushroom, this links with the other photo as in that on it creates a jellyfish like shape
