Opening

I have found several artist who have based their work upon the theme which I have based my work on ‘reactions’. Throughout my personal investigation I have explored different reactions ranging from visual to mental. I have shown this by developing from experimental photoshoots to portrait. I have been able to link my photoshoot together discussing how the outcomes from the shoots represent some form of reaction, whether it be a chemical reaction which is visible to a person’s reaction to something or the reactions in the brain. I have presented my findings in a Wix page, this contains each photoshoot I have done, the better outcomes; which have been edited using Photoshop, the experiments I have done using different images which I have taken and the recordings of what I think the photos suggest and make a person feels. I was able to develop my project by using Pinterest to find new artist/photographers. By looking at a range of artists work I have been able to take their ideas and do them my self changing certain aspects to make the soot my own and not copied of another photographer.

The first half of my project is looking at visual reactions which happen when different things are put together. I knew about an experiment which was done with cornflour and sound, I looked on YouTube to find how this was done. I tried this my self and after finding out it worked I began altering different aspects to create different outcomes. As I found this on YouTube I watched several other videos of different reactions which was done with sound and vibrations and then done an experiment of my own. These first two shoots inspired my to carry on with experimenting which lead to mixing substances with water and using light as the main aspects of some of my shoots.

As I have not done a sketch book I could not experiment with different textures and methods to create pieces. Instead I found experiments which could show different textures within a photo and tried different methods to achieve the best photos I could. I was able to combined different experiments and textures to the theme of reactions by altering photoshoots to fit my theme of work. Each page on my Wix shows the outcomes which I have edited, the contact sheet which shows all the photos which was taken during the shoot and annotation which analysis the outcomes and describes how they were done.

ARTIST ONE

Alberto Seveso a photographer that uses high speed photography and has a passion for graphic art. He uses high speed photography to capture ink submerged in water. His collection of underwater ink which he has titled ‘Heavy Metals’ has been achieved this by mixing metallic powders with water, the metallic powders are suspended in different fluids. Seveso also uses high speed photography in his work that he has titled ‘GLORY POP’.  He has created these outcomes with mixed fluo acrylic colours and sunflower oil. Seveso has spent a lot of time creating the right balance of vanish to liquid ratio, and still describes it as a work in progress.  He has also built the equipment which he uses to shoot the varnish into the liquid to create his famous pieces of work. His work shows how these ink react with the water. I think the work he does is abstract but yet so simple, when looking at his work they almost look computerised. With in his editorial work he has combined his high-speed photography with portrait pieces. By doing this he creates an abstract element to the beautiful portraits.

In this first piece you are able to why this has been put with in his ‘Heavy Metal’ project, this is as you are able to see the metallic colour within the copper, as this is shiny in comparison to the blue, which looks matt. Seveso has used shades of blue and orange as these two colours compliment and contrast each other. When looking at this piece you begin to work out how this has been done adding intriguing. With in the ink you are able to see different strands of the ink and some parts of the piece where he two colours have mixed together. The shapes that have been created by the ink make you think of a very smooth fabric such as silk or velvet, this could also link with the calming colours that have been used. A bright background has been used contrasts with the colour but also adds with the calming effect of the silk like structure. You are also able to see very light shades of the colours of the ink have also been added into the background. This image shows how metallic powder and ink react together and with water.

This second piece is more or less the opposite of the first piece. Unlike the first image this one has a black ground, which does contrast with the colours but does not give a calming effect. To compliment the black background darker colours have been used in this piece with very little of the colour having the metallic look although there is glimpses of gold through out the piece. This could suggest that within all the darkness there is glimpses of something good there or coming along. The first image had more of a structure where as this image is more of a cloud. This could suggest that darkness is like a cloud and will pass by. In this image all of the colours which have been used are all mixed among each other where has the colours used in the first begin separate and then combine together.

ARTIST TWO

For my next artist I went to the Baltic gallery in Gateshead to look at an instillation piece by Theobald and Atomik. With in this piece they explore the relationship between art architecture. This huge piece takes the form of an ambitious site-specific installation compromising music, spoken dialogue, video and live performance. The idea behind the piece reveals a space through. The series of interlinking circular spaces which have been constructed these rooms lined with duvets and screen-printed texts. The different rooms had different things projected onto the duvets with sounds. Each section had different sounds but still linked in together, almost as if they were speaking to each other. Alongside the columns of duvets there was platforms that sliced through the gallery, creating a stage where part-directed performances were captured in a live feed. These performances were everyday actions within the surroundings which suggested a kind of choreography, a scripted wordplay considers the double meaning of everyday expressions and the circularity and slippage of language.

When walking through the giant constructed piece the overlaying of the sounds from each section seemed to link in to create a conversation, it was like they were speaking to one another. Each other the separate columns had a different video stream, all live. Two were the live stream of the performances while the others were off the general public coming into and looking through the exhibition. When listening to the voice overs you are able to pick up several different themes such as love, memories and mistrust. The printed text over the duvets linked with the dialogue of the. When walking through the exhibition it was empty and felt cold giving of the feeling of sadness, unsettling mood and gives a deep atmospheric effect. The inside of all the columns look more effective than the outsides. This is due to the structures being made from wooden frames which are visible from the outside, this effects the way you look at the projection on the duvet.

Conclusion

For my final outcome I used the influences off Theobald and atomic, I knew I wanted my piece to be interactive and done with projectors. After looking at this artist I knew what to try to project on. Using the influence of Alberto Seveso I made some pieces to project.
